Core Strategy Consultation on Strategy Directions 2008

Received: 01/12/2008

Respondent: Mr. and Mr M. Partridge

Representation Summary:

Rye has been blighted by the problems of graffiti, vandalism, litter, fighting, shouting, swearing, and urinating in the streets. This is frequently fuelled by alcohol, often by under-age drinkers. This type of behaviour impacts seriously on the quality of life of both Ryers and the Tourists on whom Rye is dependent .
During the day we frequently experience some of this behaviour from groups of children who should be at school. They often have alcohol although they are not old enough to buy or consume it. They often congregate at the entrance to the old Thomas Peacocke Lower School site at the beginning of Tillingham Avenue.
We would like to see this issue brought up the agenda. Grants should be made available to property owners for small works, which could improve the situation. For example a small wall built on the area that youths use as seating would discourage them from using this place.

This problem is worst in the small hours of the night. Drunken revellers coming from the Horizon night-club disturb everyone's sleep. Cars are parked dangerously on double yellow lines. There are frequently broken bottles and kebab packaging in the gardens and especially at the entrance to the lower school site mentior)ed. We have been woken up and threatened by revellers coming from the night-club.
We would like to see this problem tackled by the installation of CCTV cameras and believe that the establishments selling alcohol and creating this problem should be paying for the CCTV and the necessary policing.

Respondent: Mr. David Carver

Representation Summary:

Paragraph 8.34(e)

Concerned over the size (1,650sq.m) of additional retail development in Rye. The Strategy correctly stresses the importance of retaining the character and shopping facilities in the Citadel. If a large supermarket was opened in the vicinity it could adversely affect the current trades.

Representation Summary:

Paragraph 8.34(e)

Believe that additional retail development should be smaller in size i.e., suffient for a Tesco Express type outlet selling groceries, wine and household items but not so large as to sell meat, fish and fresh vegetables. Resident do not want a High Street solely comprised of banks, building societies and gift shops. No additional retail development should adversely affect the character of shops in Rye.

Respondent: Mr. & Mrs. A. Winnings

Representation Summary:

Rye needs additional competitive supermarket shopping but this needs to be a small, contained area without parking spaces such as a Sainsbury local or Tesco Express. People of Rye only need to walk to this facility for more competitive food pricing. It would not bring in more cars to our busy town. Siting a small supermarket in the current proposed library site would end the unused site and could exist alongside our current independent shops and ensure their vital survival. Why not take advantage of former postern gate surgery for sale/rent to use a a library or information bureau.

Respondent: Ms. Heidermarie Foster

Representation Summary:

Culture and local environmental change is not well represented in core strategy. Great cultural wealth in Rye and money towards a small theatre venue would be nice. The space outside the station which is a beautiful building should certainly be a part of the development.

Representation Summary:

Two supermarkets could not survive. Community should have more input and control over spaces that become available for retail before being sold to Tesco or anyone else. '1650' more floor space for food retail will kill small shops in the High Street. Present supermarket intends to enlarge from what it is.
