Core Strategy Consultation on Strategy Directions 2008

Respondent: Mr. and Mr M. Partridge

Representation Summary:

Rye has been blighted by the problems of graffiti, vandalism, litter, fighting, shouting, swearing, and urinating in the streets. This is frequently fuelled by alcohol, often by under-age drinkers. This type of behaviour impacts seriously on the quality of life of both Ryers and the Tourists on whom Rye is dependent .
During the day we frequently experience some of this behaviour from groups of children who should be at school. They often have alcohol although they are not old enough to buy or consume it. They often congregate at the entrance to the old Thomas Peacocke Lower School site at the beginning of Tillingham Avenue.
We would like to see this issue brought up the agenda. Grants should be made available to property owners for small works, which could improve the situation. For example a small wall built on the area that youths use as seating would discourage them from using this place.
Core Strategy Consultation on Strategy
This problem is worst in the small hours of the night. Drunken revellers coming from the Horizon night-club disturb everyone's sleep. Cars are parked dangerously on double yellow lines. There are frequently broken bottles and kebab packaging in the gardens and especially at the entrance to the lower school site mentior)ed. We have been woken up and threatened by revellers coming from the night-club.
We would like to see this problem tackled by the installation of CCTV cameras and believe that the establishments selling alcohol and creating this problem should be paying for the CCTV and the necessary policing.
