Development and Site Allocations (DaSA) Local Plan - Options and Preferred Options

Representation ID: 22911

Respondent: Dr Joyce Longley

Representation Summary:

I do not agree that development boundaries at Normans Bay should be removed.

The areas (1) between the two current development boundaries, and (2) to the east of the current eastern development boundary are rare and valuable areas of natural coastline and hinterland.

The area adjacent to the beach immediately to the east of the easterly development boundary is an area known locally as "The Green.

Any development would detract from the visual aspect of that part of the village but would also particularly damage the view to the sea.

I do not agree that the current development boundaries at Normans Bay should be removed.

The areas (1) between the two current development boundaries, and (2) to the east of the current eastern development boundary are rare and valuable areas of natural coastline and hinterland, breaking the otherwise ribbon development along this stretch of coastline.

Both from an ecological viewpoint, its importance to the community and from the point of view of tourism and leisure, the areas outside the current development boundaries should not be disturbed.

The area adjacent to the beach immediately to the east of the easterly development boundary is an area known locally as "The Green", a particularly attractive grassed area adjacent to the beach (fringed by a row of white beach huts) which has traditionally been used for village functions and is used daily by members of the local community. Any development would greatly detract not only from the visual aspect of that part of the village of Normans Bay and an area that is an asset to the community but would also particularly damage the view to the sea afforded to guests at the high-level rental accommodation at two properties which have been very long time features of Normans Bay, namely my property, Sunshine (which formed part of what was the village store and hotel since early in the last century) and the even older historic Seaview Cottages next-door.

My property. Sunshine, had been derelict for several years prior to my purchasing it at auction in 2010. It was in such a poor state of repair that we needed to demolish half of the building and undertake very substantial rebuilding and renovation works. The result has been that the building has changed from being what was undoubtedly an eyesore to what I believe is an asset to the village without changing its essential character . The works we undertook on the building involved very substantial investment on the part of me and my husband and was undertaken on the basis that "The Green" was not an area that would be liable to development. It can be seen from the advertising material of Mulberry Cottages ,the holiday lettings company used by us, on its website that the view from our property to the sea is its greatest asset. This asset would be destroyed if development was permitted.
