The plan highlights the importance of preserving and enhancing the quality of the conservation area and the AONB. It must also recognize the importance of views - the wide sweep over the countryside which makes Rye so recognizable and famous.

The environmental constraints identified in the plan - flooding, sustainability, the character of Rye, the pressure of the AONB must be given primacy in the plan. Any future development must be rigorously assessed against these benchmarks.
