Rother Local Plan 2020-2040 (Regulation 18)

4.6

Representation ID: 26146

Received: 23/07/2024

Respondent: Sustrans

Representation Summary:

Our goal for neighbourhoods is for them to be places that connect us to each other and what we need.

Places where many can thrive without having depend on owning or driving a car. We realise that in rural areas car ownership can be necessity but it doesn't mean that it has to be the default for all. More developments put greater pressure on the roads and sustainable travel should be at the heart of them.

Centred around boosting quality of life for everyone. Rother has very few cycle paths that are of sufficient quality compared with other areas. There is little National Cycle Network in the District.

We think that the best way to do this is to ensure that it is easy for people to meet most of their everyday needs by a short, convenient and pleasant walk, wheel or cycle or short public transport trip.

Respondent: Sustrans

Representation Summary:

There are opportunities to link villages by a network of routes that could draw in walkers, cyclists, wheelers and equestrians. It's important that the network itself is networked further by considering feeder routes and improving infrastructure to enable people to access improved routes.

Proposed Policy LWL2: Facilities & Services

Representation ID: 26151

Received: 23/07/2024

Respondent: Sustrans

Representation Summary:

We would consider carefully the distances involved as they need to take into consideration topography and the speed at which different active travelers can move. Cycling distances can be greater and greater more if ebikes are considered as a way of opening up rural areas.

Representation Summary:

We would consider LCWIPs and ROWIPs here and also TfSE plans for the area. Local people are the experts in understanding short cuts and the potential to link hamlets for example with bus stops. Many rural areas used to be criss-crossed with walking routes between villages. Some of these have fallen into poor condition and with a little maintenance and accessibility improvements could be used by a wider range of people.

Proposed Policy LWL3: Walking, Wheeling, Cycling and Public Transport (Outside the Site)

Representation ID: 26160

Received: 23/07/2024

Respondent: Sustrans

Representation Summary:

We welcome these suggestions but would like Rother to go further. We would also like the Plan to consider supply chain logistics eg micro-distribution sites and the potential for leisure and tourism routes in rural areas as there are many locations that could benefit from visitors walking and cycling and routes around Rother.
