8. Rye and Rye Harbour
Representation ID: 20214
Received: 03/02/2009
Respondent: Jempson's Superstore
The document sets out in 8.34 Part e (2) additional convenience sales area within or adjacent to the town centre of 1650 sq.m. It must be considered that 40% of this has been allocated to the extension of the Jempsons/Budgens supermarket in Rye. We would also ask for consideration in deleting the phrase 'adjacent to the town centre' and replace with wording which reflects the location of any further development within the adopted Town Boundary.

Respondent: Jempson's Superstore
The document sets out in 7.31 regarding a retail study concluding an additional convenience goods floorspace required for Battle of 1000 sq.m. Whilst Jempsons has never wished to stifle competition within the food sector the suggestion in 7.32 looking at new supermarket development is to us unacceptable. We would ask for consideration to given for the inclusion of planning priorities to develop the Market Place, Battle to a much more vibrant and commercially attractive area.

This is being pursued by the Jempsons Group but the complete redevelopment of the Market Place and including the Council owned Car Park is essential to provide a successful retail centre within the town boundary which would in turn extend the shopping area/street of the town whilst remaining sympathetic to the character of the historic core.
