Beckley Parish Councillors see the protection of the High Weald AONB as of paramount importance. Question 21 re. options for the distribution of new development in rural areas
Representation ID: 18592
Received: 30/01/2007
Respondent: Beckley Parish Council
Beckley Parish Councillors fully support the Rother District Local Plan. Beckley contains 5 separate delineated development areas along Main Street and Hobbs Lane where development is permitted subject to the Local Plan. Parish Councillors would like to see the retention of the development boundaries as they stand. Any attempt to develop those areas of countryside between the 5 settlement boundaries along Main Street should be strongly resisted. The village will come under increasing pressure from developers. Future developments are likely to occur as infilling, as in the recent consent in the garden of the Poplars.

Question 8 re. securing the necessary infrastructure to achieve sustainable development and communities
Representation ID: 18593
Received: 30/01/2007
Respondent: Beckley Parish Council
Campaigns to retain the PO, pub and newsagent in Beckley have failed. Villages wished to retain these services but the Parish Council was unable to help them do so. Beckley acts as a satellite to the neighbouring parishes of Northiam and Peasmarsh. With a doctor’s surgery, PO and many other shops in Northiam and a supermarket in Peasmarsh, the return of Beckley shops is difficult to imagine.
Beckley school’s academic attainment and management has been criticised by Ofsted. Parish Councillors want the very best educational opportunities for village children. Unfortunately the Parish Council does not have influence over the school.

Question 6 re. addressing poor connectivity with the wider region and London, localised congestion and high reliance on car use
Representation ID: 18594
Received: 30/01/2007
Respondent: Beckley Parish Council
Beckley Parish Councillors would like a 30mph on Main Street and a reduction of the 60mph limit on Whitbread Lane. There is some local concern about the parking of cars on/near junctions, particularly Hobbs Lane and Whitbread Lane. More houses have been built where there was already a shortage of parking in this area. We would like to see ample rather than sufficient parking spaces provided in any future developments.
