The visually subservient requirement may stymie projects for incorporating WFH space, multi-generational living or home subdivision. In some cases, a large extension can improve the symmetry of the frontage but is in no way visually subservient. Such a requirement can result in some fairly ugly (but technically permitted development) projects that look like a lean-to add-on. The question should not be how did the house look before but rather how will it look (and function) with the addition.
