Rother is a mainly rural county. The main towns are Rye, Battle and Bexhill. The rest are mainly small villages. Away from the main towns there are limited and over subscribed Gp and health facilities, and scattered educational, retail and leisure facilities and car use is essential to access them. Unless new facilities are built in the countryside away from the main towns it is difficult to see how the villages, and their doctors, dentists, schools etc, can sustain large numbers of new houses and residents. There is also very little employment away from the main towns and so it seems obvious that unless these matters are addressed BEFORE building 1000’s of houses in the countryside, sustainable development can only be achieved near the main towns who have good train and road links, frequent bus services, main hospitals, large schools and places of further education and major retail centres etc.
