Community buildings are at risk in the Rye area. These should be nurtured, as many are being lost to the most profitable form of planning application and then sold on undeveloped at a super inflated price and often unsuitable for a purchaser to live and utilise. Properties include The Bethel in Military road, The Brewery Yard Club (British Legion), Rye Literary club are all being converted to housing. The Boys Club mermaid street is being refurbished, Methodist Chapel church Square is for sale and the former Freda Gardham school which currently provides studio space for 30 practising artists is soon to be lost to development. Where do the creative sector go? Do they leave Rye… What facilities are there for the arts festival, the jazz festival, theatrical events that have been a huge draw for tourism. The Rye community centre although ideal location lacks stage space and needs a refurb.

I think most of the period buildings in Rye will be a challenge. But things like slate tiles / photovoltaic energy worth exploring to keep the conservationists happy.
Rye harbour is a fabulous reserve, but probably its carbon footprint should be calculated with the number / volume of traffic that visits and the impact on the village itself. Trams or a bypass or a park and ride scheme would be worth exploring again.
