I think that by definition, travellers should not have a permanent site. They take the option to travel and therefore they should keep moving.

Comment (iii) When considering rural sites the size of site should be limited in relation to any adjacent community. Any proposal to increase the size of the existing site at Robertsbridge would not be acceptable. The larger the site the more it encourages isolation and discourages long-term integration into the community.

Because of previous problems experienced by local residents in this area, the Parish Council would not support the identification of land in Sedlescombe for a permanent or transit site.

As with housing development in the AONB, I object to the proposal that there should be additional Gypsy/traveller sites located in "rural areas". These will, like housing, merely add to the destruction of the AONB, which should be protected with utmost vigour.

Respondent: Environment Agency
The Environment Agency concur that any site considered for use by gypsies and travellers adheres to the same assessment as other types of development.
The risk to gypsy and traveller sites may be also increased in vulnerable areas due to the potential for non mains drainage to be used.
Gypsies and Travellers sites on page 98, criterion (vi) should include the avoidance of Source Protection Zones and contaminated land.
Page 98 Criterion (vi) a. should read "Sites on or near refuse tips or contaminated land".
Page 98 Criterion (vi) b, should read "Flood Zones 3a and 3b".
Paragraph 10.22 on page 90 should refer to the high vulnerability of residential mobile homes in areas at risk of flooding.

Travellers' site accommodation needs to be close to service centres -it would be inappropriate to site such centres in areas close to SSSI, AONB etc. It would also be unwise to site them close to very small communities where the impact of such a settlement would be exaggerated.

Paragraphs 10.49 - 10.53
Issues regarding travellers and gypsies. Also people who don't wish to come under these banners but would like to be able to move around and not be tied to a house or a mortgage. A portion of any development should be put aside to accommodate these people.
200,000 travellers occupying social houses, many have nowhere else to go because governments have failed to create proper sites. If we were to plan some good sites for those who wish to not live in a house we could release nearly 100,000 Council homes for those on the waiting list.
