Against new supermarket outside current retail area in Rye as would be detrimental to economy of the High Street and Cinque Ports Street

1.Supermarket

I have an issue with the recommendation that Rye needs more retail units in the form of a supermarket. Any proposal to put a new supermarket outside Rye's current retail area will have major repercussions on the vitality and livelihood of Rye.

A new small supermarket in, say, the High Street or Cinque Ports Street, would be fine. It would draw in people for the specialist shops that still exist in Rye, and give healthy competition to the current supermarket.

If a large supermarket with a lot of parking were to be allowed within the outskirts of Rye an already precarious economy (as acknowledged by the statistics in the Rother presentation) would probably go into steep decline. So many of the small businesses depend on footfall, and this would decline in these circumstances.

I am broadly in support of the aims and objectives for Rye as set out in Box 14. But I would emphasis that Rye has a unique environment and setting and no development should be allowed that would be detrimental to Rye's landscape.

Paragraoh 8.5 -recognises that Rye town centre only retains 10.5% of main food shopping trips. This needs to be drawn into context in comparison to other expenditure leakage figures in other town centres highlighting the seriousness of this matter.
Para 8.7: Box 14- Aim and Obiectives
Item (iii) refers to the objective to improve the availability of day to day goods and services in Rye. We believe that this item needs to be amended as follows:

"(iii) To improve the availability of day to day goods and services, palticularly for main food shopping"

We support in particular the objective to improve the commercial viability of the Port of Rye by securing additional employment floorspace in the area, and facilitating additional port facilities around Rock Channel and Rye Harbour. Priority 5 for the Rural South East seeks to develop the visitor economy, we also therefore welcome the acknowledgement of the contribution that Green' tourism could make to the local economy.
